A husband cuts his wife’s fingers so she can’t continue her education.
Read this post on a friend’s Facebook wall. It definitely surprised and saddened me to know that such incidents still happen in our society. But what surprises me more is the responses of people on this post. People are commenting on which community this couple belong to.
Rather than jumping on to the religious background of this family we must focus on the illiteracy and social/emotional development of people.
If in our society beliefs such as women must not be better in education, earnings or physically taller, better looking or younger than their husbands are supported then it is the matter of the social development of the whole society. We must introspect on why our education system doesn’t include value system of equal opportunity for all? Why marriage is a solution for all problems and daughter is a burden or commodity to either get rid off or used as salable asset? Is this happening only in certain communities? Caste based discrimination, gender based discrimination is there in all Indian communities. Highly educated professional couples also go through competitive jealousy and inter marital rivalry even in advanced countries.
And finally if a certain community in our society is less developed, who is responsible for it?
We must remember that a weak can never fight, it’s the stronger who must stand for the weaker.
Criticizing, looking down upon, laughing or humiliating others is bad we all know. But feeling pride for self, boasting great values of self and showing of how greater, better and stronger we are is even worst.
May we recognize our own potential in love, compassion and giving in ourselves.
May we acknowledge other’s potential in learning, receiving and reaching out to growing.
May my world, my countries, my communities be based on values of growing together towards a peaceful, loving, learning environment creating comforts and opportunities for everyone.
